Southern Burgundy Romanesque ChurchesSaint Martin Belle Roche

Today all that is left of the Romanesque church in Saint Martin Belle Roche is the bell tower and apse. The nave was torn down in the 19th century because of structural problems. This was during the construction of a new church that now sits next to its older sibling, making for an interesting contrast in architecture.

The bell tower of the Romanesque church is rather tall and has Lombard Bands on all sides. The top story has windows on all side. The windows are recessed by what could be called Lombard Bands adding more style to the bell tower.

The apse also has some decorative features, half round protruding decorations at the top that add simple style to the church. It’s not possible to go in what is left of the church but you can look in though the windows and observe a mural on the ceiling.
