Southern BurgundyLa Roche de Solutré

Beware of Falling Horses, Cavemen and Mammoths!

La Roche de Solutré is a great place to stretch your legs and take in the landscape. A walk to the top of La Roche - The Rock takes about an hour.

After your walk you can visit the Musée départemental de Préhistoire de Solutré. The museum will take you on a trip through time starting about 25,000 year ago. That's how long people have been coming to La Roche de Solutré, with staying power like that it can't be a tourist trap!

La Roche de Solutré once was home to a number of Stone Age civilizations and gave its name to a tool-making technique – Solutréen.

There is a local legend of falling horses. Legend has it that prehistoric hunters would stampede and drive horses off the cliff of La Roche de Solutré to kill them. Like most legends it makes a good story but isn't true.

La Roche de Solutré once played a part in French politics. Former President François Mitterrand, made a yearly get back to nature visit to the Roche de Solutré.

La Roche de Solutré is in the village of Solutré-Pouilly about 6 miles west of Mâcon.
