Haute-Savoie (French Alps)Parc de Merlet This small zoo in the French Alps lets you observe mountain wildlife in a natural environment. Animals roam free and include llamas, marmots, chamois, ibex and other mountain goats. Situated directly across from the Mont Blanc, highest mountain in Western Europe Parc de Merlet offers stunning up-close views of the French Alps. The Bossons Glacier is almost at eye level from the park. Parc de Merlet is on 20 hectares - 50 acres of mountainside at 1,490 meters - 5,000 feet. It is surrounded by forest on three sides with a patch of woods on a hill in the middle. Parc de Merlet is visited via trails, the 'Tranquille' trail stroller friendly and 'En forme' is for those looking for a little exercise. Visiting time takes about an hour and a half. The animals are use to visitors and at times seem to be posing. Parc de Merlet has a restaurant with a simple menu, including a kids menu. There is also a small play area, with what must be the sandbox with the best view of the Alps! There is no picnicking in the park but lots of picnic tables just outside. Parc de Merlet is in Les Houches, exit 27 off the N205 road between Chamonix and the A40 Autoroute. After exiting follow signs for Parc de Merlet or Merlet. The park has four parking lots P1-P4. P1/P2 are closest to the park and for those with reduced mobility and families with small children. P3/P4 are about a 25 minute uphill walk to the park.
