Southern Burgundy Romanesque ChurchesLys Romanesque (12th century) Church

The Church of Lys is located in the hamlet of Lys, a part of the village of Chissey-les-Mâcon. The church was built during the 12th century in the style of the time, Romanesque - meaning like Rome. Its bell tower is simple and square without any decoration but with multiple windows so that the sound of the bell can be easily heard.

The apse (head of the cross pointing east) is round as was the Romanesque style in Burgundy and has a number of stone moldings that add simple decoration to the exterior. The inside of the apse has a mural of what looks to be an angle.

The nave of Lys doesn't have an arch but instead simple wood trusses. The Church of Lys is a modest church and not overbearing in scale. It was built in more in human terms than that other larger Romanesque churches like Cluny or Tournus. The Church of Lys is recently renovated.
