Southern Burgundy Romanesque ChurchesGenouilly Saint Peter

Located in the Guye valley is the village of Genouilly with its Romanesque church Saint Peter, Saint Pierre in French.

Saint Peter was started at some point late in the 11th century, it’s unknown exactly when. It was built not far from the Guye, a stream that runs near Genouilly. There is a beautiful view of the church from a small bridge leaving the village.

Saint Peter, as is the case with other Romanesque churches in the region has Lombard Bands, decorative blind arcades on the outside of the church. It also has one simple apse and a bell tower almost as wide as the width of the church. This means that Saint Peter doesn’t form a cross but a straight line.

The village of Genouilly is off the D236 road. The A6 Autoroute is about a 45 minute drive away, exits Tournus or Chalon-Sud.
