Southern Burgundy Romanesque ChurchesFley

The Romanesque church in the Burgundy village of Fley once belonged to the abbey of Ferté-sur-Grosne in Saint-Ambreuil and was built by monks from the abbey. The Ferté-sur-Grosne was one of the first sister abbeys of the Cîteaux order who practice a simple life based on manual work.

The church is dedicated to Saint Euverte, Bishop of Orléans during the late 6th, early 7th century.

As is the case with many Romanesque churches in the region, Sainte Euverte has undergone many changes over the centuries, two arcades, one on each side were added in the 17th century to support the walls near the crossing. The part of the church directly under the tell tower. One also finds the church today missing its natural stone face on some of the walls as there is a thin covering of cement or plaster on all but the front wall. The effect is that Sainte Euverte is missing some of its charm and luster.

Fley is off the D28 road and near a number of other Romanesque churches, including Bissy-sur-Fley, Le Puley and Germagny. The A6 Autoroute is about a 45 minute drive away, exit Tournus.
