Haute-Savoie (French Alps)Evian

If ever there ever was a town built on water it’s Evian. Today that means the world famous mineral water that takes its name. Historically Evian was and still is, a spa town. Let’s not forget that the official name of Evian is Évian-les-Bains. That’s bains as in baths or spas. Geographically Evian was also built (almost) on water as the town rests on the banks of Lake Geneva. Lac Léman if you are French.

Evian is also at the base of a mountain meaning that the town seems to be long, narrow and at a slant. Luckily the town brought back its funicular so you don’t have to walk up the steep streets to get to the top of Evian.

If you are a visitor it’s easy to get around Evian. Near the tourist office and on the edge of the lake you will find a tourist train that will provide you whirlwind tour of the town. This will give you an idea of what Evian offers so you can chose what to see in detail. After taking the train you can then ride the funicular (if I remember right it’s free) to get a good view of Evian, Lake Geneva and the Swiss city of Lausanne on the other side of the lake.

Evian is also host to a yearly golf tournament, the Evian Masters and was host to the G8 summit of 2003.

Below are some photos I took during my trip to Evian.
