Southern Burgundy Romanesque ChurchesClessé Romanesque Church

Built around 1090 the village church of Clessé – Notre-Dame is unique in that its bell tower is octagonal. This is rare for Romanesque Churches in Southern Burgundy. Most are square and of the same basic design as can be seen in the bell towers of Uchizy Saint-Pierre and Laives Saint Martin. The bell tower also has a multicolored roof typical for Burgundy. This type of roof is mostly found in Northern Burgundy where it was created at the Hospices de Beaune.

The bell tower was built in two stages in the 11th and 12th centuries. It simple yet appealing design with each side having a window with arches and one long concave makes the bell tower the most pleasing part of Notre-Dame.

The village of Clessé is in the heart of wine country in Southern Burgundy not far from the city of Mâcon. It’s a small village but like some many in Burgundy full of charm.
