Southern BurgundyBrancion France

If your looking for a medieval village that offers breathtaking views of the Burgundy countryside, then Brancion is for you. Situated on a hill overlooking the Grosne Valley Brancion offers panoramic views of the Burgundy countryside and its mix of fields, farms and rolling hills. The best views are found in front of the church and atop the village's castle tower, entrance fee required for the castle tower (4 euros).

Brancion not only offers breathtaking views but also has a lovely Romanesque church and what once was the most important castle in Southern Burgundy.

The Romanesque church, Saint Peter is only open during the summer months. Recently (Early 2004) Saint Peter had some work done to the exterior, bringing back just about all of its beauty. Inside the church you can find frescoes dating back to the 14th century.

About half the castle is in ruins but it's still worth a visit, if for no other reason than to clime to the top of its Keep to admire a view of Burgundy worth a trip to Brancion in and of itself.

Brancion dates back as far as a 5th century charter. The village was sold in 1259, as the Brancion family who owned the village and gave it its name, were broke from waging war, to the Duke of Burgundy. Eventually in 1477 Brancion made its way in to the hands of the French crown. In 1860, in just about total ruin Brancion was sold to the Murard family, the present day owners of the castle.

Parking for Brancion can be found outside the village; only residents are allowed to drive in. It's then a very short walk to the village. Brancion can be easily visited in under two hours, picnics are not allowed in the village.

Brancion is located in Southern Burgundy off the D14 road not far from Tournus and the A6 Autoroute.
