Southern BurgundyBlanzy - Musée de la Mine

Mine Museum

This museum is housed at the former Saint-Claude Mine - puits Saint-Claude that operated from 1857-1882. The museum's main building, where tickets are sold has an upstairs exhibition of the evolution of mining and mine work. There is also a short video presentation.

The highlight of the museum is the one and a half hour guided tour (in French) of the former mine. This includes mine lamp house, with displays of mining lamps from 1830 to 1947. The visit then moves to the still standing pithead and winding drum building.

Next are the underground recreated mine areas. Second to last is the miner's lockers and the visit ends with the stables. Horses were once used in the mine. Also on display are railroad tracks and cars used by the mine.

Off the N70 road that runs between Montchanin and Paray-le-Monial, follow signs for Musée de la Mine.
