Azé is a village in Southern Burgundy near Cluny and Mâcon. The village’s name dates back until at least the time of France being under Roman control. The name Azé comes from the Latin word Aziacum, meaning land of Azi. Azi is believed to be the name of a person or family. Azé or Aziacum first appeared in a medieval manuscript from nearby Cluny with reference made to a villa. Humans (or ancestors of humans) have made Azé their home for tens of thousands of years, as the local prehistoric caves can attest. The caves (Not to be confused with the Cave d'Azé, where wine is made) can be visited from April to September. There is a campground and public swimming pool near the caves. Other attractions in Azé are a Château and Romanesque church. Market day in Azé is Sunday morning and there are local hiking trails if you would like to walk around. The town runs along the Mouge River in wine country and is at a local crossroads, with access to Cluny, Mâcon and Tournus. Wine is very important to Azé as there is a local cooperative that makes and sells wine - Cave Coopérative Vinicole d'Azé.
