Southern BurgundyAllerey-sur-Saône American Camp

Allerey-sur-Saône is a village in Southern Burgundy (Saône-et-Loire). What looks to be nondescript village is rich in American history. During WWI Allerey-sur-Saône was the site of an American Army hospital camp - Le Camp Américain d'Allerey and then an agriculture school. The American hospital in Allerey operated from July 1918 to January 1919 and then was converted into an agriculture school. During its time as an hospital, it treated almost 35,000 patients and had about 10,000 beds.

The heart of the once hospital and agriculture school is on Rue Burton (near the water tower), where there is a commemorative plaque.

In 1999 a book by Antonin Guillot about Le Camp Amé ricain d'Allerey was published. Parts of it can be found online in French and English.

Postcard of the American Camp in Allerey-sur-Saône. More postcards of the camp and village. Here's what the graveyard looked like when the camp was in use and what it looks like today, camp site in 2014, old postcard and today photo of the town hall and an old postcard of the village train station and what the station looks like today.

Allerey-sur-Saône is about a 25 minute drive from Beaune (also once the site of a WWI American university) on the D970 road. Once in Allerey, turn left on the D184 road. When you get to the water tower, you're at the once American camp.
